Visit to the Sant Bartomeu Parish Church: The Perfect Fusion of Art Nouveau and Historic Gothic in the Valley of Sóller
Discover the Parròquia de Sant Bartomeu, an architectural gem located in the charming Valley of Sóller, at the foot of the Sierra de Tramuntana on the north coast of Mallorca. This picturesque municipality, known for its stunning landscapes and rich gastronomy, also boasts a unique historical and architectural heritage, including Spain’s only operational centenary train. In this guide, we’ll take you to explore one of the region’s most iconic landmarks: the Parròquia de Sant Bartomeu.
History of the Parròquia de Sant Bartomeu
Built before 1236 and undergoing several renovations over the centuries, the Parròquia de Sant Bartomeu has evolved from a Romanesque-Gothic style to an exuberant Baroque style. In 1947, architect Joan Rubió Bellver, a disciple of Gaudí, completed the construction of the current facade, blending Art Nouveau and Gothic historicism elements. This impressive limestone temple features seven chapels on each side and a majestic Baroque heart.
In its early stages, the church was significantly smaller and had its main entrance at what is now known as the Portal de Dalt. The Baroque renovation begun in 1688 and completed in 1733 transformed its structure and orientation. Between 1904 and 1947, a final renovation resulted in the current facade, making it one of the most recognizable icons of the Valley of Sóller.
